The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Angelcare Monitors Inc. have announced the voluntary recall of Angelcare Movement and Sound Baby Monitors with Sensor Pads due to strangulation risks. There have been two reported infant cord strangulation deaths linked to the defective product.
The baby monitors include a sensor pad that is placed under the crib mattress to alert parents if the child has stopped moving. However, an infant can pull the 11-foot electrical cord that links the monitor and sensor pads into the crib, creating the danger of the cord becoming wrapped around the child’s neck. Two infant deaths have been linked to the strangulation hazard, along with two other reports of infants who became entangled by the cords.
All versions of the Angelcare sensors are affected by the recall, including model numbers: AC1100, AC201, AC300, AC401, AC601, and 49255.
Angelcare will be providing consumers with a kit to repair the dangerous defect with a rigid protective cord cover, as well as a permanent warning label about the risks.
Parents and caregivers are advised to stop using the Angelcare Baby Monitors with Sensor Pads until the cords have been repaired and placed out of his or her child’s reach.
