Dallas-based dietary supplement manufacturer USPlabs, LLC recently announced that it is recalling its OxyElite Pro sports supplements due to a confirmed link to an outbreak of liver illnesses and one death.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) originally warned the manufacturer that the OxyElite Pro and Versa-1 supplements were contaminated because the supplements contained aegeline, an ingredient that did not have a history of use or safety in the U.S. USPlabs claimed the dietary ingredient was safe but would be discontinued and destroyed due to negative publicity.
On November 6, the FDA then confirmed that the supplements were connected to an ongoing outbreak of liver illnesses in Hawaii. Of the 46 cases in the state, 27 patients that had taken OxyElite Pro had become ill.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 56 confirmed cases of severe hepatitis linked to the dietary supplement. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which can cause flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches, fever, vomiting, and headaches.
