The Texas Department of Public Safety recently wrapped up its three-day participation in “Roadcheck 2014,” a nationwide safety program targeting commercial trucks and buses. The program is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
During Roadcheck, troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) increased the rate at which they perform roadside inspections. Troopers took to the highways to identify and stop commercial trucks and busses with serious equipment violations.
Over 9,200 vehicles were inspected by state troopers, and about one in every five was found to have an equipment violation that required the truck to be placed “out of service” in order to be fixed. State troopers also stopped several commercial drivers for violations that included not having a proper commercial driver’s license (CDL) or endorsement.
State troopers also focused on stopping aggressive drivers in passenger vehicles. Passenger vehicle drivers cause more large truck accidents than truck drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). You can do your part by practicing safer driving around large trucks and buses, with these tips from experienced Texas personal injury attorneys:
- Avoid distractions. Focus on the road, and pull over into a safe and appropriate area if you need to use your cell phone or any other mobile device.
- Stay out of the “no zones” immediately behind, in front of, or beside large trucks. Assume that if you can’t see the driver’s face, the driver cannot see you.
- Pass large trucks only on the left. Pass promptly, and make sure you can see the entire front of the truck before you merge back into the lane in front of it.
