Although millions of Texans turned their clocks forward this weekend, it’s not too late to use Daylight Saving Time as a good time to run a safety check in your home or workplace. Texas personal injury attorneys recommend using the “spring forward” and “fall back” times each year not only to change your clocks, but also to check on the following safety items in your house:
- Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Replace the batteries in all your household smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms twice a year. Making this change when you adjust your clocks is an easy way to handle this important task.
- Fire extinguishers. Check the fire extinguishers in your house to make sure they are properly charged. If a fire extinguisher needs to be replaced, purchase a new one or contact your local fire department, which may be able to recharge a fire extinguisher. If you do not have fire extinguishers in your home, consider purchasing them.
- Emergency kits. If your household does not have an emergency kit, visit ready.gov to learn how to equip one. If you already have an emergency kit, check its supplies to make sure they are ready to go. If anything in the kit has expired, replace it.
- Emergency plans. Now is an excellent time to review emergency plans and make sure that family members know what to do in case of an emergency.
- Flashlights and weather radios. Make sure that flashlights and weather radios have fresh batteries as well. Use your weather radio whenever there is an increased risk of severe weather, such as in the spring.
